> Conductor runs on Mac only. Traycer is an open-source (MIT) alternative for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android for running multiple parallel agents

*By Anurag Sharma. Last checked: October 26, 2026.*

Conductor is a proprietary Mac app for running Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and OpenCode in parallel. Traycer is a free, open source (MIT) desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, with 22 supported coding agents that run in parallel and share specs, tickets and reviews inside one Task.

Conductor here means Conductor (conductor.build), the Mac app from Melty Labs, not the SEO platform or the workflow engine with the same name. If you're weighing Conductor alternatives, these are the facts that decide it.

Both use your existing agent subscriptions and give each agent its own git worktree. The difference is what each is built around. Conductor is built around the workspace: one branch per task that you review and merge on a Mac, with cloud sandboxes, scheduled routines and enterprise controls on Pro ($50/month), Teams ($60/user/month) or Enterprise. Traycer is built around the Task: several agents, from any of 22 supported coding agents, working from one shared plan, messaging each other and reviewing against that plan. It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, the iOS and Android apps and remote hosts are on the free plan, and team sharing starts at $16/user/month.

## TL;DR

**Pick Conductor if you:**

- Work on a Mac and want agents to keep running in the cloud after you close the laptop ([pricing](https://www.conductor.build/pricing)).
- Spend most of your review time in diffs and PRs: line comments back to the agent, a Checks tab, checkpoints and stacks ([diff viewer](https://www.conductor.build/docs/reference/diff-viewer), [checks](https://www.conductor.build/docs/reference/checks)).
- Want agents on a schedule or triggered by a GitHub action ([0.85.0](https://www.conductor.build/changelog/0.85.0-sections-routines-and-a-new-model-picker)).
- Need SAML SSO, SCIM, a DPA or an SLA today ([pricing](https://www.conductor.build/pricing)).

**Pick Traycer if you:**

- Work on Windows or Linux, or a mix ([install](https://docs.traycer.ai/install)).
- Want several agents to work from the same specs, tickets and reviews ([artifact workflow](https://docs.traycer.ai/concepts/artifact-workflow)).
- Want agents to message each other across Tasks and across your machines to coordinate better([agent-to-agent](https://docs.traycer.ai/concepts/agent-to-agent)).
- Want the phone apps, remote hosts and sharing with invited people on the free plan ([pricing](https://docs.traycer.ai/account/pricing)).
- Need the code to be open source (MIT) ([repo](https://github.com/traycerai/traycer)).

## What each tool is

### What is Conductor?

Conductor is a Mac app from Melty Labs, a Y Combinator Summer 2024 company. It "lets you run many coding agents in parallel on your codebase" ([llms.txt](https://www.conductor.build/llms.txt)). It runs four harnesses: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and OpenCode ([providers](https://www.conductor.build/docs/guides/providers)). Each task gets a workspace: a git worktree with its own branch and files, plus a terminal, a diff and a path to review, open a PR, merge and archive.

Since 0.78 (July 30, 2026), Conductor also offers Conductor Cloud: workspaces in Vercel sandboxes, multiplayer, an API and an MCP server. Since 0.90 (October 2, 2026), it also has an iOS app ([changelog](https://www.conductor.build/changelog)).

### What is Traycer?

Traycer is an open source (MIT) desktop app for running Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and other coding agents in parallel, with shared plans and code review ([docs](https://docs.traycer.ai/), [repo](https://github.com/traycerai/traycer)). It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, with companion apps for iOS and Android that connect to Traycer running on your computer.

Work lives in Tasks. A Task holds its agents, a worktree per agent, terminals, files and the git diff, plus artifacts: specs, tickets, stories and reviews that every agent reads and that outlast any one chat. Traycer supports 22 coding agents ([coding agents](https://docs.traycer.ai/agents-and-models/coding-agents)).

### The core difference

Conductor's unit is the workspace: one isolated branch per task that you review and merge. Traycer's unit is the Task: several agents and the shared plan they all work from.

## Platforms: Mac only vs macOS, Windows and Linux

If your team isn't all on Macs, start here.

**Is Conductor only for Mac?** Yes, as of October 26, 2026. Its install guide says: "Conductor is not available for Windows or Linux yet," with a sign-up form for news ([install](https://www.conductor.build/docs/installation)). Cloud workspaces run in Linux sandboxes, but you drive them from the Mac app or the iOS app.

Traycer has native installers for macOS 12 or newer (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows x64 (.exe or .msi, or the Linux app through WSL) and Linux x86\_64 (AppImage, .deb or .rpm). There are no ARM64 builds for Windows or Linux yet ([install](https://docs.traycer.ai/install)). The [download page](https://traycer.ai/download) has all three.

If your team is split across operating systems, that alone may decide it.

## Agents and subscriptions

Both are bring-your-own. Conductor "does not bill or resell model usage". Usage bills to the provider account, subscription or API key behind each harness ([providers](https://www.conductor.build/docs/guides/providers)). It bundles its own Claude Code and Codex binaries for compatibility, and its docs ask you not to update or modify them. Cursor runs through a Cursor API key, and OpenCode uses provider keys.

In Traycer, Claude Code and Codex are on by default with your own sign-in. Running Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode or Cursor costs no Traycer credits and adds no markup. The one exception is Auto mode: with its judge set to Automatic, Traycer's hosted model reviews commands, and that uses credits ([pricing](https://docs.traycer.ai/account/pricing)).

By count, Conductor documents four harnesses and Traycer documents 22 coding agents, including Grok, Copilot, Kiro, Droid, Amp, Devin, Antigravity, Qwen Code, Kimi and OpenRouter ([coding agents](https://docs.traycer.ai/agents-and-models/coding-agents)). Most teams run a few, so check that yours are on the list rather than counting rows. For help picking an agent, see [Codex vs Claude Code](https://traycer.ai/compare/codex-vs-claude-code) and [Cursor vs Claude Code vs Codex](https://traycer.ai/compare/cursor-vs-claude-code-vs-codex).

## Running agents in parallel

Both are worktree-based, so isolation isn't a difference.

Conductor's parallel-agents doc starts with one decision: "should these agents share a workspace, or should they move independently?" Use several workspaces when tasks should land independently, and several agents in one workspace when they share a branch and context, such as one agent implementing while another reviews ([parallel agents](https://www.conductor.build/docs/concepts/parallel-agents)). You can start a workspace from a branch, a pull request, a GitHub issue or a Linear issue. Setup scripts and "Files to copy" handle dependencies and gitignored files.

In Traycer, each agent runs Local, in a new worktree or in an existing one. A repository can run a setup script in each new worktree and a teardown script before one is removed. Sweep cleans up idle worktrees and keeps the Tasks and artifacts ([worktrees](https://docs.traycer.ai/concepts/worktrees)). Child agents appear under their parent in the Agents tree, so you can see who started what.

## Shared plans and agents that talk to each other

This is where the two tools differ most.

Artifacts (specs, tickets, stories and reviews) live on the Task, not in one chat. Built-in skills take a feature through brief, core flows, tech plan and tickets, then execution in batches and a review against the plan ([artifact workflow](https://docs.traycer.ai/concepts/artifact-workflow)). Artifacts can include wireframes: live HTML previews of proposed screens ([wireframes](https://docs.traycer.ai/panels/artifacts/wireframes)).

Agents can create child agents, message agents in the same Task, in other Tasks and on your other machines, read each other's transcripts, and claim roles so others can see who owns what. The Agent office shows the messages as they move ([agent-to-agent](https://docs.traycer.ai/concepts/agent-to-agent)).

Conductor has the pieces for context inside a workspace: Plan Mode per agent, a `.context` folder for handoffs and attachments, todos and an Artifacts tab in the Git panel, on for everyone since 0.92 ([agent modes](https://www.conductor.build/docs/concepts/agent-modes), [0.92.0](https://www.conductor.build/changelog/0.92.0-remote-control)). It supports Claude Code's experimental agent teams if you add `CLAUDE_CODE_EXPERIMENTAL_AGENT_TEAMS=1` in Settings → Environment ([FAQ](https://www.conductor.build/docs/faq)). Through its MCP server (beta), an MCP client can create cloud workspaces and delegate tasks to coding agents ([MCP](https://www.conductor.build/docs/api/mcp)). As of October 26, 2026, Conductor doesn't document messaging between agents in different workspaces or a shared spec and ticket layer that several agents work from.

## Reviewing and shipping

**Conductor wins here.** Its diff viewer takes comments on changed lines and sends them back to the agent, and GitHub review comments show up too ([diff viewer](https://www.conductor.build/docs/reference/diff-viewer)). You can edit files directly in diffs (0.84). The Checks tab gathers git status, PR metadata, CI, deployments and comments before you merge ([checks](https://www.conductor.build/docs/reference/checks)). Checkpoints revert code and chat to an earlier turn, and stacks (0.80) handle stacked PRs.

Traycer's Git Diff panel lets you read and edit changed files in place. Its docs are direct about the gap: "Diffs have no line comments. Comment threads belong to artifacts" ([Git Diff](https://docs.traycer.ai/panels/git-diff)). A second agent can review the change and write a review artifact, and you can undo an agent's turn ([review guide](https://docs.traycer.ai/guides/review-agent-changes)). The Pull Requests panel sends a failing check or a reviewer's comment back to the agent that wrote the branch with **Fix in chat** ([Pull Requests](https://docs.traycer.ai/panels/pull-requests)).

If your time goes into line-level review and merge mechanics, Conductor is faster. If it goes into checking that the change matches the plan, Traycer fits better.

## Mobile and remote machines

Conductor's iOS app shipped in 0.90 (October 2, 2026). It lets you "chat with agents and merge PRs from your phone," and works with cloud workspaces ([0.90.0](https://www.conductor.build/changelog/0.90.0-conductor-for-ios)). The pricing page lists the mobile app under Pro. Since 0.92 (October 23, 2026), remote control lets the iOS app work in your Mac's local workspaces. It's marked experimental, needs the Mac awake and online, and its traffic is end-to-end encrypted through Conductor's relay ([remote control](https://www.conductor.build/docs/reference/remote-control)). No Android app is documented as of October 26, 2026.

Traycer's iOS and Android apps run the same interface as the desktop and reach your machines through Traycer's relay. They're on the App Store and Google Play and come with every plan, including Free ([mobile](https://docs.traycer.ai/account/mobile-app)). Remote hosts are other machines running Traycer: install the CLI (`npm install -g @traycerai/cli`, or Homebrew), run `traycer login`, then `traycer host ensure` ([remote hosts](https://docs.traycer.ai/concepts/hosts/remote-hosts)). From one window you run agents, terminals and files on that machine, forward its ports, and let agents message agents there ([work across machines](https://docs.traycer.ai/guides/work-across-machines)). Traycer's built-in browser also has a design mode: annotate the page or pick an element, write what you want changed, and send it to the chat ([browsers](https://docs.traycer.ai/panels/browsers)).

The trade-off: Conductor's cloud sandboxes (8-core CPU, 16 GB RAM, Amazon Linux 2023, us-east-1) keep working with no machine of yours running ([pricing](https://www.conductor.build/pricing)). Traycer runs on machines you own today, and cloud sandboxes are coming. If you want work to continue while every computer you have is off, that's Conductor.

## Teams, privacy and security

Conductor's Multiplayer shares workspaces in a Cloud organization: teammates open the same workspaces and chats, see who's active and continue each other's work ([multiplayer](https://www.conductor.build/docs/cloud/collaboration)). Private workspaces arrived in 0.85. Pro allows shared orgs of up to 5 Pro users. Teams adds an admin portal and centralized billing, and its page says Teams plans "are currently invite-only" ([Teams](https://www.conductor.build/team-plan)). Enterprise adds SAML SSO, SCIM, a DPA and an SLA, and Conductor holds a SOC 2 Type II attestation ([pricing](https://www.conductor.build/pricing)).

On data, Conductor's pricing FAQ says local sessions send messages "directly to your coding model provider," while "chat messages sent in cloud workspaces are stored on Conductor's servers." That's the normal cost of hosted sandboxes, and it's good that Conductor says so.

Traycer lets you share a Task by email or GitHub handle as Owner, Editor or Viewer on every plan, and viewers can comment on artifacts ([sharing](https://docs.traycer.ai/panels/sharing)). Cloud sync across your own devices is free. Sharing a Task with a whole team needs the Sync plan. Traycer doesn't support SSO or SAML. Its Teams FAQ says "No" ([teams](https://docs.traycer.ai/account/teams)). Traycer is SOC 2 Type 2 certified.

## Pricing and license

| Plan | Conductor ([pricing](https://www.conductor.build/pricing)) | Traycer ([pricing](https://docs.traycer.ai/account/pricing)) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Free | $0: local workspaces on your Mac, your own subscriptions and keys | $0: your own agents, unlimited agent sessions, cloud sync, sharing with invited people, remote hosts, mobile app, agent-to-agent |
| Individual paid | Pro, $50/mo: Conductor Cloud with "a bunch of cloud workspace hours", Multiplayer with up to 5 Pro users, API, mobile app | None needed; optional credits for Traycer's own models at upstream price plus 20% |
| Team | Teams, $60/user/mo: admin portal, centralized billing (invite-only) | Sync, $20/user/mo or $16 billed yearly: team-wide Task sharing |
| Enterprise | Custom: DPA, SAML SSO, SCIM, SLA | Contact us ([enterprise](https://traycer.ai/enterprise)): SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, team seat management; no SSO or SAML |

Conductor says cloud workspaces carry no extra fee "right now," with usage-based pricing for cloud compute planned.

Conductor is proprietary. Its terms describe "Conductor's proprietary hosted AI automation software platform," and there's no public source repo ([terms](https://www.conductor.build/terms)). Traycer is open source (MIT) on [GitHub](https://github.com/traycerai/traycer).

On scale, in each company's own words: Conductor's homepage says "Trusted by 100k+ builders," and its join-us page says it has "raised $24M" ([conductor.build](https://www.conductor.build/), [join us](https://www.conductor.build/join-us)). Traycer's homepage reports 11,000+ developers using Traycer Desktop and 40,000+ Tasks created in it ([traycer.ai](https://traycer.ai/)). Those measure different things.

## Other Conductor alternatives worth a look

- **Orca:** open source (MIT); macOS, Windows and Linux; a mobile companion for iOS and an Android APK ([onorca.dev](https://www.onorca.dev/)). See [Traycer vs Orca](https://traycer.ai/compare/traycer-vs-orca).
- **T3 Code:** by Theo Browne and team; open source (MIT) and free, with a hosted web app ([app.t3.codes](https://app.t3.codes/)) alongside its desktop app ([repo](https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code)). See [Traycer vs T3 Code](https://traycer.ai/compare/traycer-vs-t3-code).
- **Paradev (formerly Superset):** source-available under ELv2; desktop app for macOS; free for one user, Pro from $16/user/mo billed yearly ([paradev.com](https://paradev.com/), [pricing](https://paradev.com/pricing)).
- **Nimbalyst:** open source (MIT) visual workspace with an agent wiki; Mac, Windows and Linux, plus a mobile app ([nimbalyst.com](https://nimbalyst.com/)).
- **Emdash:** open source (Apache-2.0); macOS, Windows and Linux ([emdash.com](https://emdash.com/), [repo](https://github.com/generalaction/emdash)).

## Which should you choose?

**You're on a Mac and want cloud sandboxes and a polished PR loop.** Use Conductor. Cloud workspaces, line comments, Checks and stacks fit that work.

**You're on Windows or Linux.** Use Traycer, or another cross-platform tool from the list above. Conductor doesn't run there yet.

**You or your team plan a feature, split it into tickets, run agents in parallel and review against the plan.** Use Traycer. Shared artifacts and agent-to-agent messaging keep the agents on one plan, and the iOS and Android apps and remote hosts, all on the free plan, let you steer them from anywhere.

**Your company needs SSO or SCIM today.** Use Conductor Enterprise. Traycer doesn't offer SSO.

**Using both.** They coexist. Both work on plain git worktrees and the same agent CLIs, so you can plan in Traycer and run a long job in a Conductor cloud workspace.
